Stories of Resilience

Alliance on Aging - Cards for Humanity

What do the people of  Monterey County do when the going gets tough? They get creative, literally and figuratively!

When the COVID pandemic forced residents of Monterey county to stay-at-home and severely limited person-to-person interaction, the going got tough for everyone. For organizations like the Alliance on Aging there were suddenly big challenge to overcome. How could the agency stay connected to elderly residents in skilled nursing and assisted living facilities when most of their agency’s services rely on in-person, on-site interactions? The Cards for Humanity project was one creative initiative to strengthen connections when their clients needed it most.

Mask Making

For mother Toula and daughter Thalia, a high school senior, a normal dinner table conversation quickly turned into an example of community resilience.

Having high risk family members, they both saw the need for masks, however there was an all-time shortage. In the beginning stages of COVID-19, the demand for masks outgrew existing supply throughout the nation. This sparked their attention in creating masks for the community, especially for the elderly, essential workers, and high-risk populations.
